We know what it's like to face a box of old tapes and no way to read them. That's exactly why RIPDat exists.
Years ago, while working in IT infrastructure, we were tasked with recovering critical backups from a library of DAT tapes — tapes that held years of project data, financial records, and irreplaceable files. The problem: the organisation no longer had a functioning tape reader, and the manpower needed to process dozens of tapes simply wasn't there.
That experience made one thing clear: this is a common problem with no easy solution. Companies and individuals are sitting on archives of data locked inside a format the modern world has forgotten — and most services either don't handle DAT tapes, charge a fortune, or treat the data carelessly.
RIPDat was built to do this properly. Transparent pricing, a clear process, and a non-destructive approach that treats your originals with the same respect you do.
The expertise behind every migration.
RIPDat is a small operation based in Leiria, Portugal. Our team manages day-to-day operations — processing tapes, generating inventory reports, handling shipping and customer communication.
The technical foundation is built and maintained by our IT advisor, who brings over 20 years of hands-on experience in enterprise sysadmin and infrastructure — including data backup, recovery systems, and tape formats. Every workflow, tool, and verification process used at RIPDat was designed and tested by someone who has done this professionally.
We are a small, focused operation — not a data centre with hundreds of jobs in the queue. Your tapes get individual attention.
